Successful reforestation: BÔNDY applies the 10 principles!

Madagascar has lost 44% of its primary forests over the past 60 years. Faced with the risk of desertification, numerous reforestation initiatives and actions have been launched to try to reverse the trend. Unfortunately, reforesting a country is not just about planting trees. Reforestation is a much more comprehensive commitment that doesn’t end on the day young seedlings are put in the ground. It begins with preparation and continues through site identification, species selection, work with local communities, and of course, monitoring.

To make every reforestation project effective today, INDRI, together with around a hundred member organizations of the Alamino initiative, has produced a reference document for any reforestation project leader: the 10 PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESSFUL REFORESTATION IN MADAGASCAR. Each principle is broken down into 5 to 6 checkboxes representing concrete steps.

Among the members of the Alamino initiative is the young, dynamic team of Bôndy, a company specializing in regreening. Bôndy committed to implementing the 10 Principles as soon as they were published, and used this document during the 2022-2023 reforestation campaign. Andrianina Razafimbelo, Forestry Engineer at Bôndy, shares their experience with us regarding the implementation of these principles.
